On 31 May 2021, the Ambition Initiative Call for the submission of NAMA Support Project (NSP) Outlines closed. This special initiative targets an even higher level of ambition than previous Calls. It aims to support countries in the implementation of their enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and to build back greener as they recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. The UK and German government, alongside the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), have committed up to EUR 174 million to the Ambition Initiative Call.
Only NSPs intervening in countries that have presented updated NDCs to UNFCCC by the closure of the Call on 31 May 2021 were eligible under the Ambition Initiative. Moreover, these NDCs were required to fulfil the NAMA Facility’s ambition criteria as described in the General Information Document for the Call. This additional eligibility requirement aligns with the commitment of the Donors of the NAMA Facility to support countries that are stepping up their climate ambitions in the run up to COP26 and against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The NAMA Facility is pleased to announce that 41 Outlines were submitted as part of the Ambition Initiative Call by various actors such as national governments and national partners including multilateral agencies, international financial institutions, NGOs, and commercial entities.
Submissions to the Ambition Initiative Call came from Africa (42%), Latin America (34%), Asia (20%), and Europe (2%). In terms of sectors, 46% of submissions were in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency, followed by agriculture and forestry land use (34%), transport (12%) and waste (7%). More information about the statistics of the Ambition Initiative Call Outline submissions is now available on the NAMA Facility’s statistics page.
